We love Luxembourg. Xavier Bettel, the country’s Prime Minister and world’s only openly gay leader of a nation, visited the Vatican with his husband, Gauthier Destenay. The Pope welcomed the couple last month for the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome.
Bettel is only one of three openly gay leaders of a country in history, preceded by Luxembourg’s former Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and Belgium’s Elio Di Rupo—seems like Luxembourg really is the most queenly of all nations. It’s also the only country ever to have a gay Deputy PM, Etienne Schneider.
